Crazy For Cranberry Season!

Cape Cod Attractions

When the weather cools and the leaves change not only is it time for many of Cape Cod’s fall festivals, the Cape Cod cranberry harvest is also underway!

Meandering through many of Cape Cod cranberry harvest trails and bogs is one of the best ways to spend a fall vacation. It allows you to get outdoors and see how farmers get those tiny crimson balls of fruit off the ground and onto our dining tables.

Cranberry Harvest Trails

Did you know that Southeastern Massachusetts – including Cape Cod – is home to more than 14,000 acres of cranberry bogs?

That’s right?

Massachusetts cranberry growers have built a proud tradition as stewards of the land, protecting the state’s fragile resources and an important part of our natural heritage.

For those who wish to witness a cranberry harvest in person, the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association has created a cranberry harvest trail guide. Although it can’t be predicted when and where a cranberry harvest is taking place, the guides will help direct you to the most probable locations.

Cranberry harvest trail guides are available at various visitor centers and tourist locations in Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod. But, before you set out on one of the trails, here are some farm tips:

  • Please keep in mind that cranberry bogs are working farms.
  • Please respect private property. Remain on paved roadway, unless there is signage that specifically invites visitors.
  • Do not walk, pick or trespass on any cranberry section.

Cranberry Harvest Celebration

If trail wandering is not your cup of tea then you and your family can also check out the Cranberry Harvest Celebration at the A.D. Makepeace Company in Wareham MA. This year’s celebration will take place on October 9 & 10 and will feature juried crafters, activities for children, animal shows, cooking demonstrations, food vendors, pony and wagon rides, and much more. The highlight of the day is an opportunity to witness a working cranberry bog!

Admission is $2, but there is no charge for children ages 6 and under. Parking is also free.
