Provincetown – The Pilgrims First Landing Spot
By Deena
Filed under Things To Do On Cape Cod
Ask most people where the pilgrims made their first U.S. landfall and they’ll say Plymouth, MA.
Right?
Wrong!
Prilgrim Pride
The first place the pilgrims actually landed in the U.S. was on Cape Cod at Provincetown. In fact today, on that very site, you’ll find a huge tower known as the Pilgrim Monument.
The Pilgrim monument was constructed between 1907 and 1910 to commemorate the pilgrims first landing in the new world. In 1620, the pilgrims spent five weeks in Provincetown before sailing on to Plymouth. During this time, while anchored in Provincetown Harbor, the pilgrims also signed the Mayflower Compact which created the first democratic society in the new world.
Part of the Provincetown Historic District, the Pilgrim Monument is the tallest all granite structure in the U.S. The first corner stone was actually ceremonially laid by president Theodore Roosevelt in 1907.
Steep Climb
Tourists from around the world come to climb the monument and visit the Provincetown Museum at the tower’s base.
For those with the lungs to endure the 116 stairs and sixty ramps, the views from the top are well worth the expended effort.
Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, $3.50 for kids fourteen and under, and free for those under 4.
Parking is free and hours are 9-7 in the summer and 9-5 in the spring and fall.
