It’s no secret that Cape Cod has a deep history.
From the Native Americans and the Wampanog Tribe to the beautiful lighthouses that adorn the coastline – there’s really no escaping Cape Cod’s past.
Historic sites are what make Cape Cod beautiful – and the Historic Hoxie House in Sandwich is no exception.
This is a popular Cape Cod tourist attraction to say the least.
Hoxie House is the Cape’s oldest saltbox home. It was built some time in the 1600′s, but the exact date is unclear because a fire in Sandwich destroyed all of the town’s early records.
The house is a saltbox design with its distinguishing long sloping roof at the back. This was also a characteristic of the saltboxes used to keep water from getting into salt during transport.
Rev John Smith and his family occupied the house beginning in 1675, and the house was then bought by Captain Abraham Hoxie in the mid-1800s. Hoxie was a whaling captain who settled in Sandwich after his whaling days ended. The house, with no modern conveniences was occupied until the late 1950s, when it was acquired by the town of Sandwich and restored to historical accuracy.
