Cape Cod lighthouses.
They’re unique. They’re mysterious. They’re quintessential New England.
Many visitors make it a point to visit at least one Cape Cod lighthouse during their stay with us. It’s one of their favorite things to do on Cape Cod – and ours too!
One lighthouse that is really pretty special is the old Bass River Lighthouse in West Dennis.
Up until the time before the lighthouse was built in 1855, local captains would pay 25 cents a month for William Crowell, a Dennis local, to keep a lantern lit in his attic as an aid to mariners.
Once the Bass River Lighthouse was in operation, Crowell was made the first keeper – a post he held until 1880.
In its day, there was lamp on the roof of Crowell’s house, and was equipped with a fifth-order Fresnel lens. That light was deemed unnecessary after the Stage Harbor lighthouse was built in 1880 – however a year later, complaints led to the re-lighting of the Bass River light. Eventually an automated beacon was installed and the Fresnel lens was removed. The Bass River Lighthouse was sold to a private owner in 1914.
Today, the Bass River Lighthouse operates as an Inn – and is quite the tourist attraction. We tell our guests that a visit to the Bass River Lighthouse is the perfect half-day excursion – topped off, perhaps, with a yummy New England clam lunch.
