Want to see something that will really knock your socks off?
The Cape Cod National Seashore is not only one of the best Cape Cod tourist attractions in the region, its magically pristine beauty was once documented by the great writer Henry David Thoreau.
In the 1800′s, Thoreau wrote…
“A man may stand there and put all America behind him.”
Thoreau was describing the great Outer Beach – protected, today, within the Cape Cod National Seashore.
Forty miles of soft sandy beach, marshes, ponds, and uplands support different species, historic lighthouses, and wild cranberry bogs. Visitors to this vast Cape Cod beach get a unique glimpse of the region’s past, present, and future – all while enjoying swimming beaches, walking and biking trails.
The Cape Cod National Seashore has it all – literally. And some of the little-known facts about the area are simply fascinating.
Did you know?

- Cape Cod National Seashore is one of the most important nesting areas for the federally-threatened Piping Plover. Abundant in the 19th century, the beach-nesting Piping Plover declined in the20th century, but have begun to recover as a result of active protection and visitor education.
- In 1990, an intense series of storms uncovered a prehistoric site on Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, MA. Archaeologists excavated the Carns Site, which was lived in by native peoples during the Early and Middle Woodland period, or approximately 2,100 to 1,100 years ago.
- The area at the northernmost tip of Cape Cod National Seashore in Provincetown is known as “Race Point”. It gets its name from the swift tidal “race” that swirls from ocean to bay around the point. The swimming beach is located a safe distance away in calmer waters.
Beach and swimming aside, you can get an unique Cape Cod beach experience by taking advantage of some exciting programs offered by rangers at the Cape Cod National Seashore, including:
- Off-road vehicle program
- Ranger-guided activities
- Junior lifeguard programs
A visit to the Cape Cod National Seashore is fun, fascinating, and educational.
Be sure to put it on your “to do” list on your next Cape Cod vacation.
