Cape Cod’s Nickerson State Park – A World Away from a Beach Vacation

If your family is the type of family that enjoys fun in the great outdoors then on your next Cape Cod vacation you simply can’t miss with a trip to Nickerson State Park in Brewster, Massachusettes.

When you find yourself in the middle of Nickerson State Park you might just forget that Cape Cod is a world renown beach destination. With 1900 acres of piney woods, eight crystal clear fresh water ponds and the abundant and varied wildlife, the beach often seems like its a world away.

The states parks main attractions are the eight kettle ponds formed over 10,000 years ago by retreating glaciers. These large pockets of water aren’t fed by rivers or streams but are completely dependent on groundwater and precipitation causing the water level to fluctuate substantially from season to season. Some ponds offer swimming and canoing, another offers motor boating, and still others offer well stocked trout fishing.

Other forms of recreation available to visitors include eight miles of roads, numerous hiking and horseback riding trails, canoe, paddle boat and sailboat rentals, an eight mile bike path that is part of the 25 mile Cape Cod rail trail, yurt camping, an amphitheater and nature center. Young kids will especially love the crafts programs offered at the nature center where they learn to build bird feeders and dreamcatchers.

While your out on the hiking and biking trails you just might stumble across some of the local wildlife such as raccoons, deer,, foxes, skunks and a number of different species of birds.  Or, visit in winter for a real treat of cross country skiing. That’s something you won’t find many places on Cape cod.

You will also find all the necessary park facilities such as  restrooms, showers, trailer and RV dumping, picnic and camping areas and boat ramps.

So if you want a change from the usual Cape Cod beach vacation give Nickerson State Park a visit. Its just one of the many reasons Cape Cod is America’s all in one vacation destination.
