There are tons of things to do on a Cape Cod vacation. Hiking, swimming, fishing, sunbathing, seeing some local history and spending a lazy day reading on the beach are all activities, available at different locations across the area, you and your family will want to enjoy. But, its also nice not to have to spend your entire vacation running from one place to the next.
So, what do you do? Here’s one solution. On your next Cape Cod vacation, make sure you visit Sandy Neck Beach.
Sandy Neck is a six mile long stretch of beach located in both Sandwich and Barnstable. This beautiful beach has a lot to offer with beach facilities that include restrooms, lifeguards, outdoor showers and a snack bar. There are also, of course, all the regular beach associated activities like swimming, fishing and just kicking back in a beach chair and relaxing with a book. But, aside from the expected beach fun, Sandy Neck offers a lot more as well.
Along with the beautiful sandy waterfront Sandy Neck also borders the 4,000 acre Great Salt marsh. Trails along the salt marsh offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy hikes on which they can spot all varieties of wildlife including endangered local species of toads and turtles. Trail brochures are available at the Rangers station to help you map your course.
Sandy Neck beach also offers the opportunity to do a little four wheeling. If you have a four wheel drive vehicle you can purchase a permit through the town of Barnstable that will allow you to drive your vehicle on the beach, assuming you pass a simple inspection requiring you to have a tow rope, shovel and spare tire.
If you are interested in the local history and architecture, at the tip of the neck sits Sandy Neck Light, an old black and white lighthouse built in 1857 that once operated off of acetylene gas. Though it was decommissioned in 1952 and is now privately owned, it is a piece of local history and, as a lighthouse, a must see part of any Cape Cod vacation.
As you can see there is no shortage of great activities to choose from so be sure to make Sandy Neck Beach part of your next Cape Cod vacation. Its everything you could want in a Cape Cod Beach and a whole lot more.
