Amid the hum of the busy back-to-school and work routines, many families are thinking about their next vacation. And, for many, their sights are set on Columbus Day weekend.
The long Columbus Day weekend is the perfect time to come to Cape Cod because autumn is in full swing, the weather is pleasant and cool, and the foliage is simply stunning.
So, what is there to do on Cape Cod in the fall on Columbus Day weekend?
Well, just about everything! From great apple and pumplin-picking to leaf peeping – you and your family can enjoy all of the sights and activities of fall on Cape Cod.
Pick A Pumpkin, Or Some Apples
Apple picking is an extremely popular fall pastime in New England – especially Massachusetts
The Bay State is, in fact, the 12th biggest apple producer in the nation!
According to the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, Massachusetts-grown apples pour $12 to $15 million into the economy.
And apples grown in Massachusetts– not to mention Cape Cod – are some of the tastiest in the country!
If you’re in the mood to stroll through an orchard on Columbus Day Weekend on Cape Cod here is where you’ll find the cream of the crop:
- Peachtree Circle – West Falmouth
- Crow Farm – Sandwich
- Hemeon Farm – Harwich
Of course, you can’t pick an apple in October without picking out a pumpkin. Head to a good old-fashion pumpkin patch, like Tony Andrew’s Farm in East Falmouth, where pumpkin picking is a time honored tradition.
Other harvest activities at the farm include tractor rides and a very special non-scary (lights-on) tour of the newly expanded Harvest of Horrors Haunted House.
New England is known for its brilliant fall foliage – and this is the time of year to experience it for yourself.
Grab a cup of cider and head to Old King’s Highway in Barnstable MA.
The narrow, foliage-lined road winds from the Sagamore Bridge over the Cape Cod Canal and through the towns of Sandwich, Barnstable, Yarmouth Port, Dennis, Brewster and Orleans. Don’t miss Edward Gorey’s preserved home on Strawberry Lane — together with a view of the Cape Cod bay. Depending on the weather and the season, you may catch the cranberry harvest.
