The Salt Pond Visitor Center At The National Seashore

Consisting of almost 45,000 acres of beaches, sand dunes, marshes, freshwater ponds, and historic sites –  the Cape Cod National Seashore is one of those Cape Cod tourist attractions that has something for everyone.

And, if you’re planning a trip to the National Seashore,  the Salt Pond Visitors Center is a great place to start.

History And Nature


Those who stop by the Salt Pond Visitor Center will find so much to do and see. Exhibits offer a look at the unique and highly varied environment that makes up the cape Cod National Seashore. There is also an auditorium that shows a number of short films (less than 20 minutes) covering topics like geology of the area, whaling, and Henry David Thoreau.


The center’s museum displays artifacts from the life of whaling captain Edward Penniman – including his journal, tea service and top hat – as well as other displays focusing on things like whaling and scrimshaw.

Once you’ve covered the museum’s interior – head outside and explore the surrounding trails. The center offers ranger-guided walks, or you can just set out on your own.

There is even an outdoor amphitheater that  has activities scheduled most evenings throughout the summer.
