A Hidden Jewel
If you’re looking to explore the outdoors and enjoy a little sand and gentle surf, then you may want to consider a trip to one of Cape Cod’s hidden jewels: Nickerson State Park in Brewster MA.
Not Your Typical Cape Cod Beach Destination
Nickerson State Park is not your typical Cape Cod beach vacation spot. With 1900 acres of piney woods, crystal clear fresh water ponds and the abundant and varied wildlife, its beach often seems like its a world away.
Unique Kettle Ponds
The real attraction at Nickerson are the kettle ponds. There are eight of them – each formed more than 10,000 years ago by retreating glaciers.
These large pockets of water aren’t fed by rivers or streams but are completely dependent on groundwater and precipitation. Some ponds offer swimming and canoing, another offers motor boating, and still others offer well stocked trout fishing.
Hiking and Horseback
If you’re not in the mood for a swim, other recreation is available at Nickerson including numerous hiking and horseback riding trails, canoe, paddle boat and sailboat rentals, an eight mile bike path that is part of the 25 mile Cape Cod rail trail, yurt camping, an amphitheater and nature center.
While you’re out on the hiking and biking trails be sure to keep an eye out for local wildlife such as raccoons, deer,, foxes, skunks and a number of different species of birds.
