Sand Sculptures Kick Off Summer In Yarmouth

Things To Do In Cape Cod

Gonna be in Cape Cod this week for the official summer kick off? Head to South Yarmouth where the sand sculptures are up and the town is getting ready for its inaugural 2011 Yarmouth Summer Celebration Kick-Off!

The weeklong event is sponsored by the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League and is funded through a grant from the Yarmouth tourism fund, created with revenue from increased room and meals taxes passed in 2010. The goal is to draw more tourists into Yarmouth before the start of the traditional summer season.

Activities for the rest of the week include professional kite flying, fireworks and eventually the sculptors will descend on Bass River Beach, where more than 20 tons of sand will be worked into a Yarmouth-themed scene.

Beachgoers are also encouraged to try their hand in an amateur sand-sculpting contest on Wednesday.
