Nantucket may very well be one of the most beautiful spots in all of New England – not to mention one of the most popular Cape Cod attractions.
There’s so much to do on the tiny island – including bike riding, renting a scooter, hitting the beach, sailing, surfing, shopping, and of course sight-seeing.
One of the most popular things to see in Cape Cod and Nantucket is the Brant Point Lighthouse.
Built in 1746, the Brant Point Lighthouse is one of the oldest Cape Cod lighthouses in the region.
Since its creation, a total of nine different structures have stood in the same spot. The present Brant Point Light was built 596 feet east of the previous one in 1901 and fitted with a fifth order Fresnel lens. Its white light was changed to red in 1933 to avoid confusion with house lights. The red light was then automated in the 1960′s.
Brant Point’s notable red light is unique not only for its color, but its level. The light beams just 26 feet above sea level, making it one of the lowest of New England lighthouses. It is seen by thousands of people each year as they enter and leave Nantucket on ferries.
In fact, on your next Cape Cod vacation to Nantucket be sure to keep your ears out for the phrase, “…coming ’round Brant Point.”
You’ll know its in reference to the Brant Point Lighthouse – Nantucket’s shining red star.
